Month fact: June used to be the fourth month in the year. Before Julius Caesar came to power, the calendar year only had 10 months. In 46 BC he created the Julian calendar by adding two more months to the year, which made June the sixth month.

Lanzarote June attractions
June midsummer’s night
On midsummer’s night around the 23rd June, bonfires are lit all around the island to ward off pagan spirits. The solstice is celebrated with superstition and many people go down to the sea to bathe at midnight for good luck and if you jump over the bonfire 3 times you will be cleansed. There are plenty of events around the island. The village of Haria being the most prominent as San Juan is the patron saint of the village.
An amazing spectacle of art takes place in the island’s capital of Arrecife around the Church of San Gines, where colourful carpets are made in the streets using salt. The date in this month can vary so you need to check exactly when this is being held as after just one day the carpets are swept away.
Lanzarote is fortunate in having different markets almost every day. Among them, the most outstanding market is the one that takes places in Teguise every Sunday. But it is not the only one.
Teguise Market: There is no doubt that it is the most famous. It is celebrated every Sunday in the village of Teguise. It is situated in the old town from 9:00 to 2:00pm.
You can find agricultural and handmade products, jewels, costume jewellery, clothes, wine and also different fast-food stalls. Also, at 11:00am there is a live folklore music show in the Leones Square where you can enjoy a wonderful traditional dance performance.
Mancha Blanca Market: Is a farmer’s market every Sunday in the Mancha Blanca square, next to the hermitage of Los Dolores. From 9:00am to 2:00pm. With fruits, vegetables, pastries, dry fish, cheeses and local products.
Costa Teguise Market: Every Tuesday the agricultural market is in Pueblo Marinero, from 9:00am to 2:00pm with farmers’ products, crafts, ecology products, wines and cheeses of the island. Then, every Wednesday and Friday the craft market is in the same place, but in the afternoons: from 5:00pm to 10:00pm. There you will find art and craft products, costume jewellery, jewels and clothes.
Arrecife Market: Every Saturday morning from 9:00 to 2:00pm in the city centre, the agricultural market is in Las Palmas square (next to San Gines Church). There are pastries, fruits, vegetables, cheeses, wines, marmalades and mojo sauce (a typical canary spicy sauce.)
